Image formats are not interchangeable. Choosing the wrong format can mean a 5 MB file where 200 KB would do, or a transparent logo that shows a white box instead. Understanding the differences helps you pick the right format for every job.
PNG uses lossless compression — no quality is lost when saving. It supports transparent backgrounds, making it the standard for logos, icons, and UI elements. The trade-off is larger file sizes compared to JPG. Use PNG when your image has text, sharp edges, or a transparent background.
JPG uses lossy compression — it removes data to shrink file size. At 80–90% quality, most people cannot tell the difference from the original. It does not support transparency. Use JPG for photographs, product images, and anything you're uploading to WhatsApp, social media, or a website where file size matters.
WebP is Google's image format designed for the web. It produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality, and supports transparency like PNG. All major browsers now support WebP. If you're uploading images to a website, WebP is the best choice for page speed and Google Core Web Vitals scores.
BMP (Bitmap) is an uncompressed format from the early Windows era. Files are very large with no quality benefit over PNG. Convert BMP files away from this format whenever possible — to PNG for graphics or JPG for photos.
