What is Pitru Smaran?

Pitru Smaran (पितृ स्मरण) is a free app to manage your family's ancestral Shraddha rituals. It tracks Pitru Tithis, calculates Shraddha dates using Hindu panchang, and sends reminders before upcoming rituals. All data stays on your device — no account needed.

What if I only know the Tithi and not the exact death date?

Pitru Smaran is designed for incomplete information. You can enter just the Tithi (like Dwitiya or Ashtami), and the app will calculate all future occurrences of that Tithi. You can optionally add Paksha (Shukla or Krishna) and lunar month for more accuracy.

What is Pitru Paksha?

Pitru Paksha (also called Pitru Paksham or Mahalaya Paksha) is a 16-day period in the Hindu lunar calendar (Bhadrapada/Ashwin month) dedicated to honouring ancestors. Shraddha performed during Pitru Paksha is considered especially auspicious. The app shows exact Pitru Paksha dates each year.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. Pitru Smaran is a Progressive Web App (PWA). Once loaded, it works fully offline. All data is stored in your browser's IndexedDB — nothing is sent to any server. You can install it on your Android or iOS home screen like a native app.

What rituals can I track?

You can track Annual Shraddha (Varshik Shraddha), Pitru Paksha Shraddha, daily rituals like Tarpan, and custom family rituals. Each ritual has a checklist with items like Pind Daan, Brahmin Bhojan, Tarpan, and Dana (donations).

Is the panchang calculation accurate?

Yes. Pitru Smaran uses Jean Meeus astronomical algorithms (the same used in professional astrology software) to calculate the moon's longitude and determine the exact Tithi for any date. Accuracy is within ±0.3° of the moon's position.

Hindu Shraddha rituals are performed on the death anniversary Tithi — not on a fixed calendar date. If your family knows "Dada Ji's Shraddha is on Dwitiya of Krishna Paksha," this app converts that to the exact upcoming date every year using authentic panchang calculations.

The app also shows Pitru Paksha dates (Mahalaya Paksha) each year and lets you track which Tithi within Pitru Paksha is relevant for each ancestor.
