In Vedic (Hindu) astrology, your Rashi (राशि) is your moon sign — the zodiac sign in which the Moon was placed at the exact moment of your birth. This is distinct from Western astrology, which uses the sun sign (the zodiac sign the Sun occupied at birth). In Indian tradition, the Rashi is considered far more important than the sun sign because the Moon changes signs every 2.5 days and represents the mind, emotions, and subconscious self.
Your Western sun sign (Aries, Taurus, Leo, etc.) depends only on your birth date — the Sun moves through one sign per month. Your Vedic moon sign (Mesh, Vrishabh, Simha, etc.) depends on the precise position of the Moon at your birth time — requiring an exact birth time and location for accuracy. This is why asking someone their "sign" in India often means asking their Rashi, while internationally it means the sun sign.
