The Right to Information Act 2005 is an Indian law that gives citizens the right to access information held by public authorities. Any Indian citizen can file an RTI application to seek information from any Central or State government office, public sector undertaking, or government-funded institution.
The RTI application fee for Central Government offices is ₹10. It can be paid by Indian Postal Order (IPO), Demand Draft, Court Fee Stamp, or online (for online RTI). For State Governments, the fee may vary (usually ₹10–₹50). BPL card holders are completely exempt from fees.
The Public Information Officer (PIO) must respond within 30 days of receiving the application. For matters concerning life or liberty, the deadline is 48 hours. If no response is received within 30 days, you can file a first appeal with the First Appellate Authority.
If there is no response within 30 days, file a First Appeal with the First Appellate Authority (FAA) of the same department within 30 days. If unsatisfied with FAA response (or no response within 45 days), file a Second Appeal with the Central Information Commission (CIC) at cic.gov.in or the State Information Commission.
Yes. RTI applications to Central Government ministries and departments can be filed online at rtionline.gov.in. State government RTIs may have separate portals. You need to create an account and pay the ₹10 fee online through net banking, debit card, or UPI.
Under Section 8 of RTI Act, certain information is exempt: information that threatens national security or sovereignty, cabinet papers, personal information not related to public interest, information given in fiduciary capacity, trade secrets, and information that would harm third-party interests.
